My name is Laurie Pickering and I have created this website to share with you my love of this beautiful environment.
I live within the New Forest National Park with my wife Kathy, having moved here in December 2010. Being keen on birdwatching, walking and wildlife the New Forest was the perfect choice to be our ideal home. Since my childhood I have had a great attraction to horses, amassing numerous models and statues to display all around my bedroom to riding them in the local farmers field. You could say I'm now in seventh heaven with such a superb abundance of the horses and ponies I have loved all my life, right on my doorstep.
I have been a keen photographer from my childhood days too, but I have not had any professional training.
Being self-taught I take photographs purely for my own enjoyment and to share them with friends.
The camera equipment I currently use is a Nikon D60 DSLR 10.2-megapixel with AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5 - F5.6 Vibration Reduction zoom lens / Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm F4.5 - F5.6 Vibration Reduction telephoto lens, a Canon EOS 700D DSLR 18-megapixel with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5 - F5.6 IS STM zoom lens / Tokina AT-X M100 Pro D AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens and a Canon IXUS 255 HS 12.1-megapixel compact with 4.3 - 43mm F3.0 - F6.9 lens. I always carry the Canon compact with me whenever I go out. This way I'm always prepared to capture the unexpected encounter with the Forest wildlife wherever they appear; whether it's the ponies, donkeys or cattle roaming along the roads to the timid deer darting in and out of the undergrowth.
The Forest has so many ancient trees, many of which create such weird and wonderful shapes. You will see a lot of my photographs showcasing this aspect of the Forest. And the main attraction of the New Forest, of course, the iconic New Forest Ponies. They will also be making several appearances here.
My intention of this website is to convey the atmosphere and mood of life in the National Park through photographs. It is not an 'official tourist guide' of the area. There are so many other websites focusing on this aspect anyway that I feel another one is unnecessary.
All of the photographs are taken by me so I retain full copyright at all times of both the digital and printed versions. None of these photographs are to be used elsewhere for any other purpose without my permission.
They are all available to purchase now, up to A4 in size and mounted in cardboard frames. Enquire for details. You would just be purchasing a printed copy for your own personal use, with full copyright still assigned to me.
I'll end this bio with a photo taken of me by Kathy whilst out walking with our little Yorkshire Terrier in Eyeworth Wood, just next to Eyeworth Pond, Fritham in April 2012. I've gone in 'camouflage' gear as we were doing a spot of birdwatching as well as enjoying a beautiful sunny and warm day in the Forest.
