The same gnarly tree shot from different positions.
I was on a specific mission here today (April 2015). To ascend Hart Hill and photograph a bench with three memorial plaques dedicated to members of the Burnett family, and a Triangulation Pillar (Trig Point) - a distance of about 3/4 mile.
So, I began by leaving the car park and heading along the main track...
... a few scenic shots along the way of fallen and damaged trees...
... when the next two gravel tracks join, turn right. This is the track you'll be on now towards Hart Hill...
... it's just a gentle gradient at this point ...
... another scenery shot enroute...
... a path bends off left at this point but you need to keep straight on. This is where the steeper climb begins, so be prepared...
... your route is still straight ahead here. You just may be able to pick out the bench in the distance at the top of the hill...
... it's really getting tough now, but you can clearly see the welcoming bench at the top...
... if you're reading the plaques, you've made it! The inscription at the bottom of the centre plaque reads:
"O sit still. And look long. And hold yourself quiet"
Well, I certainly did. I sat for a short time to recover from the climb and listen to the Forest (you may hear the traffic noise from the A31 road nearby though, but hopefully it won't pose too much of a distraction)...
... close-up of the plaques...
... this is the view from behind the bench down Hart Hill...
... just a little further to go to reach the trig point, but a much gentler slope now...
... one of many gorse bushes along the track...
... through the two wooden gate posts, turn left and there is the trig point. You're now at a height of 104 metres above sea level. You could continue northwest, around Stonard Wood, and walk along "Murray's Passage" to Fox Hill (see OTHER SIGHTS section for these areas), but for now this is our destination...
... having got what I came for on this occasion I headed back to the car park, and got this final scenery shot halfway down Hart Hill.
Almost back at the car park and I came across a few of my old friends, so I took a few more shots to finish my assignment for the day.
